3 Tips For Improving Edmonton Kids’ Attention Spans

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

South Edmonton immunization schedule

Hello Alberta parents! Today in the Edmonton Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in South Edmonton.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the teaching, in a medical nursing field, and South Edmonton area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Edmonton and Calgary libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

3 Easy Ways For Edmonton Kids to Get More Antioxidants

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

South Edmonton kids shot schedule

Because antioxidants are associated with cell damage and cell death, parents in the South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, and teaching area often mistakenly assume that antioxidants are only important for adults and the elderly, those with more visible cell death and damage. But that simply isn’t the case. Everyone needs antioxidants for their health, even kids.

Antioxidants work their magic by protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the normal metabolic processes that take place in everyone’s bodies (even kids!) all the time. Free radicals may also occur from pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, or when the body breaks down certain medicines.

Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. You might remember from chemistry class that this is the same process that causes an apple slice to turn brown. During oxidation in the cells, DNA can be damaged and changed, which can create the beginnings of disease. A chain reaction of damage can also occur with one damaged molecule becomes a free radical itself and then damages another, and so on.

Now that you know their importance, here are 3 great ways to get more antioxidants into your kids’ diets.

1. Get more veggies on their plates at dinner time and in their lunch boxes

2. Make fruit the snack of choice for your family

3. When buying processed snacks, choose those fortified with antioxidants.

teaching Kid’s Health: Guard Against Chapped Skin

teaching Kids Health Guard Against Chapped Skin

When it comes to your teaching child’s health, you might first think of their diet. While putting vitamins and minerals inside your child’s body is important, you also need to pay attention to what is going on on the outside. I’m talking about your child’s skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and when skin’s smoothness is disrupted, small cracks and openings can create an entryway for bacteria and germs.

Active teaching kids don’t often think of the condition of their skin until it starts hurting. Playing outside in hot, cold, or dry weather can lead to small cracks around knuckles or nails. This painful condition is called dermatitis, or extreme dryness. Temperature extremes in teaching make it harder to keep skin moist and healthy – dry, chapped and cracked skin is common in summer and winter.

Many kids lick their lips until they turn red or bleed. Reminding your child to drink plenty of water can prevent over-dryness.  Using a humidifier during the night in your child’s bedroom can also help.

Make sure you leave moisturizing lip balm in handy locations: by their bed, the front door and in the car so reapplying it becomes habit. Remind them to slick some over their cuticles as well, to prevent cracking.

in a medical nursing field dermatologists suggest a using a daily skin moisturizer that contains shea butter and aloe to draw moisture into the skin and keep it in place.

Encourage in a medical nursing field kids to use waterproof gloves when playing outside in the cold. Lightweight gloves with grips added to the palms are great for playing ball and riding bikes. In addition to protecting skin from dryness, they keep small hands from slipping. You can pick these up at Alberta sporting good stores or in a medical nursing field big box stores.

Using a non-drying sanitizer is another way to prevent bacteria from entering through the skin. Look for brands that are alcohol-free to prevent excessive dryness.

Old-School Snacks For Edmonton and Calgary Kids

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Less Meat, More Plants For Healthier South Edmonton Kids

What does it take to make a healthy snack? The aisles at every South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, and teaching grocery store are lined with packages that claim to be healthy and to contain the newest, most exciting vitamin or mineral. But is that really what makes a snack healthy?

Chances are that the answer is no. A lot of the foods that make healthy snacks are not the ones that you find packaged in the middle of the supermarket. Rather, they are what we would consider plain old food.

Plain old food has the advantage of being unprocessed and free of chemicals and preservatives. So, let’s take a look at these seemingly boring snack ingredients.

Cheese is a real protein powerhouse for your kids, so a little goes a long way. For a fun twist, try using cookie cutters to make shapes that your kids will love to gobble up!

Peanut butter and childhood go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. Ants on a log, peanut butter spread on celery with raisins is always a fun treat. If your child has peanut allergies, you can always substitute almond butter in most recipes.

Low-fat yogurt is probably a favorite of your child’s already, but this versatile source of calcium has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Try adding berries, or something crunchy like granola or whole-grain cereal. And, in the hot summer months, a yogurt pop can really hit the spot.

The humble egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Hard-boiled eggs kept in the fridge might be one of the most convenient ways to enjoy this high-protein snack.

As you can see, the secret to children’s nutrition might just be that there is no secret at all. Find real food, make it into a snack, and ignore the claims made by processed, pre-packaged food.

Music is Magic for Edmonton Kids

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

South Edmonton immunization schedule

Parents in and around Edmonton know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for teaching, in a medical nursing field, and South Edmonton parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the Edmonton and Calgary area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the Edmonton community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with teaching, in a medical nursing field, and South Edmonton libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, Edmonton parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

4 Things Your Edmonton Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

South Edmonton Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, and teaching areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Edmonton Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

Keeping in a medical nursing field Kids Regular

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

Nutrition for Edmonton and Calgary children

It might be an awkward subject for Edmonton parents to bring up with an older child, but making sure your son or daughter is having regular bowel movements is essential for their health – at all ages. If your child is experiencing problems with this, try these natural fixes before you resort to a medication.

Increased water intake is often all it takes for Edmonton and Calgary area kids to overcome this problem since dehydration is a common cause.

To encourage your child to drink more water, try getting them their own water bottle and keeping it full in the fridge. That way, even if your child is too small to reach the tap themselves, they always have easy access to cold water.

It’s important to evaluate the diet of your child and look for opportunities to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods contain the fiber that is necessary for bowel health. Plus, you’ll see lots of additional health benefits from these steps toward proper nutrition.

If natural remedies don’t alleviate the problem, consult with your South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, or teaching pediatrician.

My name is Ailene Infante and I want to help Edmonton families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in teaching concern me. I also own a fantastic Edmonton and Calgary area home business that sells protein meal shake and omega squares.

Computer Tips For Edmonton Kids

Computer Tips For Edmonton Kids

If your Edmonton children are anything like mine, they love to spend time on the computer. Instead of hopping on their bike and zipping over to t5t6z2 to talk to their friends they would rather email or Facebook them. When I was growing up in Edmonton and Calgary, we used cans tied together with yarn to communicate from tree house to tree house and as far as mail went we used good old snail mail.

My name is Ailene Infante and this is my blog where I advocate for Edmonton children’s health and talk about protein meal shake. Today we will discuss the importance of teaching our Alberta kids safe habits to govern their computer time to help prevent injury.

Edmonton parents and caregivers need to regulate children’s computer usage
. Moderation is the key. My kids would sit in front of the computer all day if I let them, but we set the timer for 30 minutes and then it is time to choose another activity, like enjoying the Edmonton sunshine. By taking breaks the muscles used while computing are able to mend and repair themselves so that they are less likely to become injured.

Kids need to vary the ways they operate the computer so that different muscles get used. Instead of manipulating a mouse for every command, teach them to use a touch pad. Many Edmonton and Calgary software stores sell voice activated systems which allow kids to switch up how they work at the computer to allow different muscles to work. Encourage your kids to take breaks to stretch and even shut their eyes for a few moments.

Alberta parents should coach their children on the proper way to sit at the computer. Posture is very important and should be loose and inherent, not stiff or unnatural. The habits we teach our Alberta kids will serve them throughout their lives.

Healthy habits for Alberta kids include eating nutritious food and exercising daily. For more information about keeping your kids healthy contact me today.

3 Critical Toy Safety Rules For Edmonton Parents

Friday, October 25th, 2013

Edmonton and Calgary childrens vitamins

Between holidays and birthdays, there are plenty of opportunities for gift giving in the Edmonton and Calgary area, so parents are often on the lookout for toys to give at the next big event. Toys can promote children’s health by stimulating the mind, encouraging imagination, or by getting kids moving around and exercising. But whatever toy you choose, make sure it is safe.

Next time you are browsing the toy aisle of your favorite South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, or teaching department store, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be sure that you purchase toys that suit the child’s age and abilities. Buying a toy that is meant for older children is a possible safety hazard and should always be avoided.

2. Once you’ve chosen an age-appropriate toy, read all of the enclosed instructions before allowing your kids to play with it.

3. This can be difficult when you have children of differing ages, but you should always make sure that older kids play with toys containing small parts away from younger children, and never allow them to leave the game pieces unattended.

And, speaking of gifts, remember that ribbons and strings should be taken away immediately after a gift or toy is unwrapped.

My name is Ailene Infante and I am passionate about kids health in South Edmonton. 4 Important Reasons To Care For Your Edmonton Child’s Baby Teeth

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

Immunizations Edmonton and Calgary

It’s a common misconception among Edmonton and Calgary area parents that since baby teeth are just going to fall out, you don’t need to worry too much about dental care. This couldn’t be further from the truth!

First, baby’s first teeth are necessary to maintain the proper amount of space in the mouth for the permanent teeth to come. Think of them as little white placeholders in your kid’s gums.

When it comes to children’s nutrition and getting kids to eat better, South Edmonton, in a medical nursing field, and teaching parents are always looking for solutions. Because of this, the second reason for baby teeth health should be particularly interesting: having healthy baby teeth will lead to a healthy, more diverse diet. This is because children who have trouble chewing tend to reject new foods, such as raw fruits and vegetables.

Reason number three is your child’s speech development. Without teeth, speaking clearly is particularly challenging for children, even when their cognitive development is normal and healthy.

And finally, the fourth reason for keeping baby teeth cared for are the great habits you and your children will form as you teach them to brush for 2 minutes twice a day, floss daily, and avoid sugary drinks and candy.

A great way to get your child on the healthy teeth bandwagon is to go to any in a medical nursing field, Edmonton and Calgary or teaching drugstore and let them choose their own toothbrush.

Thanks for reading the Edmonton Children’s Health Blog. My name is Ailene Infante and I enjoying sharing information within the Edmonton and Calgary community regarding kids’ health issues such as immunization schedules and childhood obesity in teaching.
